I know that it may be hard to believe that anything is free these days. It seems that everything has a price tag attached to it, but there is a way to build a website without opening your wallet at all.

USE WORDPRESS.COM
WordPress.com (which shouldn’t be confused with WordPress.org) is a great way to build a website for free.
It’s easy to get signed up and started, and their tutorials walk you through the entire process.
WordPress.com is free, but it does have restrictions. In fact, right from the beginning they begin to up-sell to you.
WordPress.com comes with a free domain that you can choose, but it’s long and hard to remember. The WordPress dashboard is limited as well, and you don’t have a ton of good themes to choose from.
Your website will also display an advertisement at the top promoting WordPress.com.
The important thing to remember is that it’s free and you can build a website without spending a dime. The free version doesn’t give you a whole lot and after a while you would probably upgrade your account to get more features.
WordPress.com is good for a basic blog, but it wouldn’t be my first choice for a place to host my website – even the free version.

Have you heard of Wix? I’m joking.
I am sure by now you have seen the Youtube Commercials.
Wix.com offers several different premium plans with a whole bunch a great features, or you could use their free one. Since this blog post is about building a website free of cost, I’m going to create a free account.
With the free account there are restrictions.
The free domain name is a subdomain of wixsite.com. This subdomain is far better than the free one offered to you by WordPress.com. Like WordPress.com, there is a banner at the top of your website advertising the free service.
The editor for Wix.com is simple to use and there is plenty of resources to learn how to use the platform. The greatest problem I have with Wix.com is it’s impossible to export your website to a new sever if you decide to leave Wix. This means if you build a website with Wix, then you are stuck with them for life (of you can rebuild your website). This is why I prefer to use WordPress for my websites.
