Can You Make Money Selling DoTerra? Take A Look At What I Learned.

I’m sure that you’ve heard of or been asked to join DoTerra at one time in your life.

DoTerra was founded in 2008 by David Stirling and some former executives from Young Living.

Over the years, DeTerra has made some bold claims. In fact, in 2014 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an FDA Warning Letter to doTerra because they marketed their product as being able to cure several deceases including cancer.

I first heard of DoTERRA a few years ago when a friend wanted to host a essential oil party our house. I listened carefully about the products that were on display, and what they could do to improve in my life.

It sounded like an offer that I couldn't pass up.

I spent $800 that day on about 40 items, a few days later, I had buyers remorse like I’ve never had before.

I know.

The essential oils from DoTerra were good. MLM companies usually sell good quality products - I mean, you kinda have to for the price they charge. 

We used them for a while, but then the thrill of them faded away, and I believe they are still in my cupboard.

WHY NOT START SELLING OILS MYSELF?

There was a time when I considered selling DoTerra essential oils, and try to make a significant passive income for my family and me. Like everyone else, I wanted a residual income pipeline. 

I thought that using doTerra as my products, I couldn’t fail.

But after some research, I decided that It wasn’t something that I wanted to do.

Why? Because I had dIscovered that I probably wouldn’t make enough money for the investment.

Before someone starts a business, the first question that you need to ask  is how much money can I make? I decided that the amount of work wouldn’t produce enough income to make it worth my while.

HOW MUCH TIME BEFORE YOU START MAKING MONEY?

Any business takes time to establish, but MLM companies take far more time and effort because it depends highly on relationships.

There are two ways to make money with DoTerra: you can earn as a sharer or a builder. Let’s make this even more straightforward: you can sell to others as a distributor, or you can build a team.

BECOME A DISTRIBUTOR

As a distributor, you need to convince people that they need to buy DoTerra's oils. Price is always going to be an obstacle in why people don’t buy DoTerra’s oils.

They are really priced high.

How do you convince someone to buy oils that are 50% more than direct-to-the-consumer oils? You must convince them that your oils are far better than anyone else’s. This isn’t true.

I am sure that DoTerra’s oils are better than several companies oils. I mean, I wouldn’t just go to any place and buy essential oils, but to say that all other companies pale in comparison to your greatest - is a stretch.

As a distributor, you get 25% off the retail price.

I think you understand that making a profit from selling DoTerra’s oils would be difficult. Not impossible, but difficult.

If you’re interested in using DoTerra’s oils yourself, and want to sell to friends and family to equal out what you pay a month for your supple - it’s great idea (just don’t be over compelling-you won’t have any friends left).

If you are going to make “replace income” money with DoTerra you’re going to need to build a team.

BUILDING A TEAM FOR BIG PROFITS, I THINK?

Below is a chart of how DoTerra’s payment structure is designed.

I know that DoTerra would say that they are not a pyramid, and would do every thing in their power never to use that word ever!

All I’m saying is what I’m looking at sure looks triangular to me. It actually looks like a church! Weird. 

Some have suggested that MLM businesses are legal pyramids because they use the same concept as a pyramid, but are structured in such a way that doesn’t classify them as a “pyramid” business.

Thought the diagram above looks great, and you’d love to have that income stream flowing in. You need to remember that it is very difficult to accomplish.

You would have to sign up hundreds of wellness advocates in order to accomplish this feat - wonderful if you can. 

CRUNCH THE NUMBERS

Consider this before you begin your MLM start-up. 

Only .5% (that’s right, half of 1%) of those that are Wellness Advocates and are selling DoTerra make over $9,000 a year.

The odds are not on your side. I believe that you can make Some money, but chances are you’re not going to make a lot.

IT’S A TRIBE

DoTerra is selling more than just essential oils, they're selling a platform and resolve to make the world a better place.

I mean, this has to be their marketing plan because they’re charging so much for a 15 ml bottle of plant juice. lol. 

People become hooked on being apart of this wellness tribe; they do a great job getting people hooked - they boost at having a 70% retention rate.

WHY I DECIDED NOT TO SELL DOTERRA

There are several areas which turn me off to any MLM company.

The first reason is because I’m not a fan of face to face selling, and recruiting friends and family. I don’t want my friends and family not want me to come around. My sister is a part of several MLM companies and that’s all we hear. It get’s real annoying.

The second reason is the price. Their products are 50% more than oils that you can buy on Amazon or other reputable outlets.

WARNING: MY OPINION IS COMING UP.

DoTERRA’s essential oils are not better than other oils because they stamp a whole bunch of labels on them. Most higher-end essential oils are 100% pure and therapeutic grade. The problem with the other companies' oils is that they spend less on advertising.

DoTerra’s good.

Funny too.

The another reason I didn’t want to sell with doTerra is that they have a limited product line.

What if someone doesn't want essential oils?

I always thought that doTerra should work at expanding their product line into more and different wellness products. Well, no one ever asked me my opinion, anyways.

The last reason why I decided not to attempt to build a team and try to make money with DoTerra was because (drum roll please . . . . ) I found a better way.

When I discovered affiliate marketing, I got hooked. And knew that I could make far more money with affiliate marketing than I could with an MLM company. It’s True.

I am glad I never started a business with DoTerra, and I’m super happy I did build an online business with affiliate marketing.
